Dear Russell,
Ok, I know what your problem is. The Python library that
VMD 1.7.1 was linked against doesn't get along with some processors.
To get around this problem, I've got a non-Python build of VMD 1.7.1
that you can download here:
  ftp://ftp.ks.uiuc.edu/pub/mdscope/vmd/vmd-1.7.1/vmd_LINUX.nopython

Try replacing the "vmd_LINUX" binary on your system with that one
and let me know if it works. If it runs ok, then the remaining
issues to nail down are what to do (if anything) about hardware
acceleration on your machine since you've got Xig. That VMD binary
I mention above was compiled for the DRI support in XFree86. If you
think it will work with Xig, give it a shot and let us know how it
runs for you.

Thanks,
  John Stone
