Brian,
  I believe that his problem is the 'vmd' startup script not finding 'xterm'.
The 'vmd' in the xterm command line is just the window title. He should be
getting the full path to the /usr/local/lib/vmd/vmd_LINUX executable as
the last item on that xterm line. If not, then that would be indicative
of a problem as well (in that case, I'd guess he didn't actually install
VMD at all and was trying to run it out of the unpacked tar file, which is
a relatively common mistake..)
