john is a much better expert on this, so i guess he can give you
a more detailed answer, but from my limited experience there are
three things you could consider:
- mpeg-1 compression has its limitations, you can use a different
tool (mjpegtools, mencoder) to do an mpeg-2 or mpeg-4 compression.
just keep the intermediate images and run the new compressor manually.
- smooth images before compressing them. also try to reduce sharp
contrasts in color and brightness as they create more artefacts.
- render larger images. some movie players can do a smoothed
downscaling. this would come at a high computational and data or
memory (storage) cost, though.
