Roman,
  We appreciate your input. Most existing VMD users actually
expect this behavior, and don't use VMD over a remote display
connection, so it's a tricky issue to consider changing the
default behavior which has been this way for over a decade.
In any case, I think a few tweaks to the GUI would make it
easy to enable/disable, and of course one can add it to the .vmdrc.
