Dear VMD-L,
  I'm happy to announce that we have released the latest
version of VMD on the web site. The key features provided
in this release are described on the VMD 1.8.7 announcement
page, and in the general "README" release notes therein:
  http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/vmd-1.8.7/

It has taken us a long time to prepare this new version due
to the significant technological advances we've made in using
multi-core processors and GPUs to accelerate several of the
most computationally demanding features of VMD. We hope that
we will be able to release subsequent versions of VMD much more
rapidly now that the foundation is in place for further work in
this area.
