After my last posting, I checked with NVIDIA drivers, found there was a
newer version, and thought "it can't hurt!" And, glory be to God,
installing NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-270.41.06.run fixed the problem.

Sorry for the panic, but if any of you have a similar problem: update
your driver!
