The problem you're encountering is fixed in the upcoming VMD 1.8.2
release. If you wish to test the most recent MacOS X VMD build, I put
up VMD 1.8.2 beta 7 for FTP here:
ftp://ftp.ks.uiuc.edu/pub/mdscope/vmd/alpha/vmd182b7.dmg
Let me know how that works for you.
