You can specify key bindings in your ~/.vmdrc to do 90-degree rotations, e.g.:
user add key q {rotate x by 90}
user add key w {rotate y by -90}
and so on...
Then, when you press 'q', 'w', ... in VMD (after reseting the view with '=') you'll get what you want.
